Pickering did not experience a single building boom; the construction of new dwellings in the city was spread throughout multiple decades in the twentieth and twenty-first century. In this part of the Greater Toronto Area metropolitan area, the majority of buildings are single detached homes, while townhouses make up most of the remaining housing stock. Homeowners occupy about 85% of the units in Pickering and renters occupy the remainder. This city offers mainly three bedroom and four or more bedroom homes.
